Gears are used in a big number of mechanical devices. Most importantly, they supply gear reduction for motorized equipment. This is important because usually tiny motors that spin very rapidly can supply sufficient electrical power to the unit, but not adequate torque, the force that causes an object to spin or twist on an axis. For case in point, an electric powered screwdriver has a very big gear reduction (decreases the speed of a rotating machine (like an electric powered motor)) because it demands a good deal of torque to change the screw. But the motor makes only a little volume of torque at higher speeds. With equipment reduction, the output velocity can be decreased even though escalating the torque.
